The Twelve Days of Reading!

I LOVE doing the Twelve Days of Reading each year!

Normally we have a contest of sorts... we keep track of our reading minutes and the class with the highest total minutes earns a movie, craft, and treat in the Media Center.  Other years we've had a party where the top five readers (based on how many minutes they read during the 12 days) get to come to the Media Center and participate in different activities.  This year with all the wonderful craziness of opening a new school we've decided to change it up a bit...

Instead of keeping track of how many minutes we read, we will just READ!  For FUN!  Every opportunity we get during the first 12 school days in December!

So, cozy up with a good book, and READ!

Continued Gratitude

This week I am grateful for LOVE.  You can't buy it, but you sure can share it and feel it!

Ivy Loves to Give by Freya Blackwood (PIC B) is one of the sweetest books.  We will be sharing LOVE in the Library this week with Ivy.

More gratitude

One of the things I'm grateful for this week is my WARM bed.  (I think everyone is =)  This is the story that came to my mind when I thought of my warm bed.  Mine isn't as crowded as this one, thank heavens!

This story actually has three of the things I'm grateful for this week... my warm bed, rain, and SUNSHINE!  Enjoy!

I am grateful for good friends...

During the month of November, I like to think of one thing I'm grateful for each day (I can think of SO many more, but let's just go with one a day for now =)  I post them on a wall here in our Media Center for all to see.  This week one of the things I am thankful for are good friends (I was blessed with 500 new friends when I came to Riverview =) and that prompted our story this week...

Norris is a wise bear, and knows how to watch and wait.  He also knows how to share and make new friends... TWO new friends!  Join us this week in the Library as we learn about Norris, Tulip, and Violet.

It's almost halloween... BOO!

This week in the Library, we are singing, I mean READING... no, I mean SINGING!  Yes, singing... The 13 Nights of Halloween!  It is the fun story (song?) sung to the tune of The Twelve Days of Christmas.

We LOVE it!  We've had a great time with it, and discovered some seriously great singing talent here at our school in the process =)  Don't forget... choir starts November 1st =)

This week in the "library"

I everyone!  I sure enjoyed coming to visit your classrooms last week!  Thank you for letting me share a little bit about myself, including one of my favorite stories!

This coming week I will again be visiting your classrooms, as our Media Center isn't quite complete yet.  We do have a move in day of Friday though, and I am SO excited!  Soon YOU can come visit ME in the Media Center =)

This week as I come visit, we will be reading Ordinary Mary's Extraordinary Deed by Emily Pearson.  I love this story!  It's all about being kind to others and "paying it forward." We will also be paying it forward this year at Riverview and I'm hoping to hear back about your kind deeds so we can post them here on our blog.  I can't wait to see what you do...

Summer Reading...

So, I've been busy reading (surprise!) and I would like to share with you some of the books I've read already this summer...

The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan.
I will be honest.  I've tried reading this book a couple of times, and got distracted each time.  I'm determined to get through it this time =)  I have loved Rick Riordan's other books, and was surprised that I struggled to get into this one.  I think it was the Egyptian/Greek Mythology that got me all confused.  I'm currently reading it again, and WILL finish it!

The Summer of Moolight Secrets by Danette Haworth.
I want to be Allie Jo!  What a cool place to live! This is a fun story about hidden rooms, summer friends, and secrets.  I enjoyed it and think you will too!

The Ghost of Crutchfield Hall by Mary Downing Hahn.  I love Mary Downing Hahn.  Spooky enough to keep you reading, not so spooky that you need the light on after you've read =)  I of course enjoyed this one as well.  Part of me would like to actually have a ghostly experience, you know, the cold chills, feeling of being watched.  Sounds exciting!  Great book!

Peg Kehret is another "spooky" author, whose books I enjoy reading.  The Runaway Twin isn't exactly "spooky," but it is adventurous!  You will enjoy reading about Sunny, and her adventures as she searches for her long lost sister.  Just watch out for the tornado!

TOTAL GUMBALL COUNT

You guys ROCK!! I am totally amazed at how much you read this year!

32,031 books! For each "Just Right Book" you read we put a gumball in your grade level gumball machine...

...that equals 32,031 gumballs that we collected! You are TOTALLY amazing! I hope to see every one of you at Summer Library so you can keep up on your reading!

Gumball update...

...you are AMAZING!!! We have collected over 22,000 gumballs! Each one of those gumballs represents a "just right book" that you have read, and you have certainly been busy reading! I'm impressed!

This Friday, May 13th, is the last day to turn in any gumballs... I've updated our gumball machines, so you can see where your grade level stands in the competition. First and Second grade are competing against one another, Third and Fourth grade are competing against one another, and Fifth and Sixth grade are against each other. It's definitely a tight race, so KEEP READING!!

This week in the Library...

...we will be reading several books written by Orem High School students, some of which are former Cascade students! I love this week, and look forward to it each year. We are able to read each story, then take a quiz (found at the back of each book) and then make comments to the author. The authors LOVE IT!! They so enjoy hearing back from their readers, just as real authors do.

Our lower grades will be finishing off the series Knuffle Bunny by Mo Willems this week, with his final installment Knuffle Bunny Free: An Unexpected Diversion - it's got a surprise ending!

Beehive Book Award Nominees 2012

We will be introducing all of the nominees throughout the remainder of the year, and into next school year. After they have all be introduced, we will have the opportunity to vote for a favorite (we don't all have to pick the same one =) I will submit our votes, and we will see next year which book wins! It might even be YOUR favorite one that wins!
Our book of the week... All the World, by Liz Garton Scanlon, illustrated by Marla Frazee. This book is one of the Utah Beehive Book Award Picture book nominees for 2012. I LOVE THIS BOOK!! The illustrations are absolutely beautiful! I wish I could draw and paint like Marla...they are spectacular. The story itself is told a little differently than most. Join us in the Library this week as we explore this amazing book. This is the first one we will introduce...stay tuned next week for the next one!

See the entire list of Beehive Award nominees for 2012 HERE.

Hold on to your hoodies...!

Last week we learned a little about poetry, where it is in the Library, (811) and read a few out loud. This week, we will review some fairy tales, and what better way to do that than to read Betsy Red Hoodie by Gail Carson Levine! Gail takes several fairy-tales/nursery rhymes and weaves them together for a very cute story. See if you can identify all the fairy-tales/nursery rhymes that the author uses to create the story... it's been great fun so far!

This book resides in the PIC section of our Library, but we can find the other fairy-tale books in the Non-fiction section - 398

Here's what we are reading in the Library this week:
This is a picture book (PIC) and the author's last name begins with a "G." What is the call number or "address" of this book? If you said PIC G you would be absolutely CORRECT! Pat yourself on the back =) This is a super cute story about a rabbit, a bear, a family of mice, a fox, a worm, and a cute little boy. Oh, and a wonderful book! Let's read it together!

Adventures in Reading!

March begins our "Adventures in Reading!" month here at Cascade! So many exciting things going on!
On March 7th we begin a week of "Drop Everything And Read." Each student will receive a reading log, and will record their reading each night all during the week. On Friday (March 11) each student that returns their reading log to the Library/Media Center will receive a goodie from Mrs. Haymond.

Please read EVERY day! The more you read, the more you know, the better you are at reading, and the easier it gets to read! PARENTS, ANY reading counts during our Adventures in Reading - "Drop Everything and Read" week. We want to encourage our students to read, and so appreciate all your help at home. Encourage them to read, read, READ this week!
~ ~ ~ ~ ~

I LOVE this quote from Groucho Marx... "I find television to be very educating. Every time somebody turns on the set, I go in the other room and read a book."

Let's do LOTS of reading this week, and don't forget to fill out a gumball for each just right book that you read! Have FUN!!

Tuesday, February 22, 2011

It's Presidents week in the Library! Our lower grades will be reading about cute Arthur...

Next week in the Library...

...we get a fun science exhibit!

Earthquakes in the Intermountain West
What can happen when moderate to strong earthquakes (magnitudes 5.0-7.5) occur in the Intermountain West (Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana)?

A new traveling exhibit tells our earthquake story using photos and examples from accounts of earthquakes that have occurred in our area within the last 80 years.

But... it's not just interesting history! Visiting the exhibit is a good first step in preparing for the next earthquake.

You will learn what an earthquake is, why we have them, what they can do, and what you can do about it.

Earthquakes in the Intermountain West is a traveling photographic exhibit that is available for display free of charge to schools, public institutions, and groups interested in earthquake preparedness.

Visit this site for more information on earthquakes in the Intermountain West: www.seis.utah.edu (University of Utah Seismograph Stations)
~ ~ ~ ~ ~

We will be watching a clip from Bill Nye the Science Guy about how earthquakes happen, and learning where in our libray we can find books about earthquakes. In our non-fiction section... 551. Where? 551!

Guess what's coming...?

Next week all the fun begins, with a class by class walkthrough on Monday. Book Fair hours and activities can be found below:You should receive one of these fliers with your book fair flier as well. You can enlarge the above image just by clicking on it. Happy book fair! Your "ticket to read!"

These are the books we are sharing in the Library this week...
Next week we will be watching the Scholastic Book Fair video which spotlights some of the great books that will be at our book fair the following week. We are also working on getting our books returned to the correct shelf, and in the correct manner. Spine out, pages in, right side up =), and inside the book end. We love it when our books stand up nice and tall on the shelves. We've learned that if they are not returned to the shelves properly, it can damage the books, and make it difficult for others to find them. We are all working together to keep our library looking neat and orderly! Thank you Cascade students!

Here's what we are reading in the library this week...
